NY STATUE OF LIBERTY CLOSED FOR SECURITY UPGRADE
The Statue of Liberty will be closed for security upgrades from 12 October 2011. Tourists will no longer be able to visit the crown, base and pedestal for up to 12 months but will still be able to visit the park surrounding the statue. The upgrade will see the addition of fire-proof staircases, elevators to the National Monument. At the moment the only exit from the top of the 22-story observation deck is one narrow staircase. The statue was briefly evacuated in July following a false fire alarm. The statue was also closed after the September 11, 2001 attacks but reopened three years later in 2004. However the crown observation deck remained off limits until last year. Next year the Statue of Liberty will celebrate its 125th anniversary.
